CHALLENGE
There are hundreds of horoscope apps on the App Store, oversaturating the market. The challenge was to create something new using an in-depth API that would give the user more information while also designing illustrations to give the user a unique experience.

APPROACH
I began my research with a Competitive Analysis, looking at four direct competitors: Sanctuary, Astro Guide, The Daily Horoscope, and Co-Star. After gathering insights on their free features, premium features, user flows, pros, and cons I developed a product roadmap of our own to make Astro Daily stand out amongst these successful competitors.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
- Gathers birth chart information upon sign up
- All features are free other than expert personal astrology reading
- In-depth data and astrological charts
- Plain UI with little to no frills or extras
- Unique and colorful illustrations with a dark interface
- Option to link with family or friends
- 7-day free trial and then subscription required
- Limited data compared to other competitors
- Instead of user importing their personal data upon signup, they must select their sign daily
- Lacks personalized data
- Outdated UI
- Expensive subscription considering the lack of data provided
- Detailed signup flow which results in detailed astrological readings for users

SOLUTION
After the competitive analysis, I built out my roadmap, frameworks, and design inspirations to see where Astro Daily could fit within this market. Remember, not only did we want a unique UI but we also wanted to give our users more data than other competitors while representing that data in a fun new way.
1. Find an API that will give our users all of the astrological data they'd be looking for
2. Design signup flows that gather the necessary data from our users in order to give them an accurate reading
3. Brainstorm and design new ways to represent the user's data
4. Illustrate planets and stars to incorporate throughout the design
5. Conduct user testing and surveys
SIGNUP FLOW
To give the user access to their personalized data, I needed to design a signup flow that gathered the information for their birth chart. In order to create an accurate birth chart given the API we were using, we needed: their birth date, birth time, and birth location.
PLANET CALCULATIONS
Planet Calculations is one of Astro Daily's standout features. Apps like Sanctuary had planetary calculations available, however, I designed this feature in a very different way.
Each planet or celestial body can be selected to get a sneak peek into its transits for that day. If the user wishes to see more information about that planet they can select "Read more" to get additional information and readings into what that transit means for the specific user.
Planets may even have a life or romantic reading for that day, which is indicated by a ring around that planet.
All of these planets and stars were illustrated by myself to ensure a completely unique experience.
DAILY HOROSCOPE & BIRTH CHART
Astro Daily's daily horoscope feature gives a detailed analysis into the users: personal life, work, health, travel, luck, and emotions. Along with this information the user can also see yesterday's and tomorrow's horoscopes with premium access. As you can see, the bottom navigation reflects the user's personal zodiac sign. Upon signup, the user's data revealed that they are a Virgo, which is reflected in their birth chart and bottom navigation to add a personal touch.
The birth chart gives the user access to the signs that makeup their personality. Upon clicking into one of their signs they can get further insights into what that sign means for them and what house it's in.
COMPATIBILITY
Astro Daily's Zodiac and Birth Chart Compatibility are additional standout features. These features not only let users check their compatibility with other zodiac signs, but they also allow the user to check the compatibility between their birth chart and someone else's.
The Zodiac Compatibility feature shows the user a scroller where they can scroll through the different horoscope options. Not just checking compatibility with their own sign but anyone else's as well. Once the two signs are entered the user gets a compatibility percentage as well as a reading to provide additional insights.
The Birth Chart Compatibility feature allows the user to enter in someone else's birth chart to get detailed reading into their: friendship, love, sun & rising. With premium access, the user can also get readings into their: romantic forecast, karma & destiny.
SUMMARY
Astro Daily was designed for iOS for both mobile and iPad devices. In addition to the high fidelity screens that are displayed in this case study, I also created user journeys, wireframes, prototypes, style guides, ui kits, app icon, App Store screenshots, and conducted user testing.
