CHALLENGE

The challenge for the OddsChecker US mobile app was to create something unique to the market.  OddsChecker already had an impressive suite of expert handicappers whose picks were responsible for a large amount of traffic.  However, we'd lose our users quickly after they selected a pick or claimed an offer.  How could we improve our direct traffic and engagement while standing out against competitors?

APPROACH

I began my work looking at our top competitors and indirect competitors, including but not limited to: Action Network, BetQL, Betting Pros, Bleacher Report, ESPN, and Gametime.

In addition to looking at our competition I was also working with our Customer Insights team to run large scale quantitative research with bettors across the US.

This research was to accomplish two things:

1.  Validate our need for a mobile app

2.  Better understand our user segments (Casual, Proficient, and Expert) and identify which one we should focus on.

RESEARCH FINDINGS

Competitors

Among competitors there was a lack of personalization compared to sports content apps like ESPN or Bleacher Report.  Users can add their preferred sportsbooks but they can't get curated content based off of their favorite handicappers, leagues, teams...etc.  This was a big opening for us to explore further.

Key User Segment

Out of our three user segments the Proficient bettor was our clear winner.  They make up the second largest in population (38%) but the largest in average weekly staking amount, making them the highest value segment.  Their product preferences are driven by speed and ease of use plus free bets and promotions.  They over index on Picks/Handicappers and are high consumers of online sports and betting content.

OddsChecker's App

These research findings gave us direction on what features to include in the app and the importance of a personalized experience.  Our assumptions on a mobile app increasing engagement were validated as 75% of proficient bettors use native apps for betting.  Lastly, we now know our primary users look for promotions, expert picks, and the best odds.  I now had a clear direction in how to move forward with initial app concepts.

DIRECTION

OddsChecker's mobile app would be a bettor's ultimate gambling companion by providing a personalized and easy-to-use experience.  Users will be empowered to quickly & simply discover the best bets & promotions at the right time, right price, and with the right sportsbook.

KEY USER JOURNEYS

What is most important to the user and the business?

Data Capture

An onboarding experience where user preferences are captured is critical for powering the key distinguishing feature of this app: Personalization.  We would use our existing Premium Subscription model, giving premium expert picks for free in exchange for a detailed onboarding experience.  This will allow OddsChecker to gather data on its users while offering them premium and personalized content, picks, odds, and offers.

Claiming an Offer

Surface relevant and personalized offers/promotions leading to user clickouts and ultimately claims of these offers with partner operators.  As offers and promotions are extremely important to our users we'll be giving them personalized offers based on their preferred books to make their experience as seamless as possible.

Selecting a Bet

Placing a bet is the most important journey for both business and user. The app must offer multiple pathways for users to discover the most relevant and attractive bets for them, leading users to add to beslip (shopping cart) and deeplinked clickouts to partner operators (direct bet).

FINAL APP

Below is the vision for the final app

1. The Onboarding Experience

Onboarding will not be required upon downloading but users will be prompted throughout the experience to add their preferences. Questions include:

Preferred sportsbook, handicapper, sport/league, team, player, what their betting experience is, and what their betting interests are.

1. Personalized Homepage & Latest News

The Homepage will have two tabs:

1. "For You" displaying the user's personalized or recommended Offers, Picks, Odds, and News based off of what their preferences are.

2. "Latest" displaying all Offers and News

3. Matchup Hub

The Matchup Hub is a one stop shop for odds, stats, futures, and props. If the user has gone through onboarding their Matchup Hub will be organized based on their favorite sports/leagues.

4. Picks Hub

The Picks Hub will house all expert picks and articles. If the user has gone through onboarding their Picks will be prioritized by their favorite handicappers.

5. Offers

The Offers Hub will give the user access to all Sports & Casino offers as well as Boosts. These offers will be prioritized by the users preferred sportsbook.

5. Account Page *Future State*

Idea for the future of the Account page:

Add gamification and socialization in order to incentivize the user to go through the full onboarding experience and complete their profile (Duolingo style).  Socialization will allow users to follow their favorite handicappers as well as their friends who use the platform, catering to our proficient bettor who wants betting to be fun.
